Website or Claim Analysis

The claim that I chose was the television host Mike Rowe’s recent public address on his speaking with independent presidential nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr on Mike Rowe’s likelihood on him being his running mate on the ticket for president.

At first, I was highly skeptical that Mike Rowe would even entertain the thought of him being on the ticket to become the vice president, especially after Mike Rowe’s Instagram post quoting, “Boarding a flight at DFW, saw this on the monitor. The airport is a funny place.” While he was not aware that he was on the short list of candidates for Vice President, it was shortly after that he got a phone call from RFK Jr.’s team asking him to sit down with him and talk about if they were to run together how it would be handled and what he would like to be done.

I initially saw this post on Instagram myself, following Mike Rowe and seeing his post about his potential nomination. I thought it was a fake news story from NBC News about running mates for RFK Jr., and a rumor had leaked about how Mike Rowe was one of them. Also, NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, former Minnesota governor, and WWE star Jesse Ventura were listed as potential mates so that you could understand my confusion and see if the story was legitimate.

The first thing I did when I saw this headline was laugh it off, thinking it was just a news source trying to be the first to report on a significant news story. While determining if the story was real, I waited until either Mike Rowe or Robert F Kennedy Jr. commented thoughtfully. Mike Rowe had already commented on it, but it was more of a joking matter than something serious.

To use the SIFT method:

  1. I read the story initially reported by CNN about how Mike Rowe, amongst other big names, was going to be RFK Jr.’s running mate on the ticket for president this coming fall.
  2. Seeing as the story came from CNN, I took it as nearly 100% true. However, I should still do my research to find the story’s source.
  3. I checked RFK Jr.’s official website, FOX News, and NBC News, researching other news sources and trying to find some validating information against the original headline.
  4. After reviewing all the sources, I deemed the story correct, as well as all the others listed in the original CNN story.

I think everyone should apply this method to their daily lives in whatever source of news they take in, whether political, financial, or sports-related. Doing this is a great way to verify that you are reading the correct information. Then in turn, putting out accurate information to others to ensure they also have the best source of information.
